The Bremerhaven team surprisingly beat Skelleftea AIK in the first leg with 5:0 (4:0, 0:0, 1:0). The Penguins made things clear in their own hall early on.
After less than a quarter of an hour, the home side were already 4-0 ahead on Tuesday evening. Markus Vikingstad scored the first goal in the first CHL round of 16 game in the Penguins’ history (7th minute). With the majority, the Bremerhaven team even struck twice against the Swedes: first Ziga Jeglic extended the lead (11th), then captain Jan Urbas increased it to 3-0 (13th). Ross Mauermann (15th) scored the final point in a memorable opening third in the ice arena.
The second period of the game, however, went without a goal on either side. On the other hand, the penalty times increased, but neither the Pinguins nor Skelleftea were able to capitalize on them. In the final third, Bremerhaven also had one man less on the ice early on after a penalty against Anders Gronlund – but as soon as the hosts were full again, Nino Kinder scored the next Pinguins goal (43′). No further goals were scored in the final quarter of an hour, so the home team celebrated a confident 5-0 win in the end.
On Tuesday it’s about the quarter-finals
Thanks to the clear win in the first leg, coach Alexander Sulzer’s team has secured an excellent starting position for the second leg. The penguins will meet Skelleftea again next Tuesday (6 p.m.). 60 minutes of ice hockey separate the Bremerhaven team from reaching the CHL quarter-finals in the knockout game in Sweden.
