Pavel Fischer already defended his senate mandate in the first round. He won 53.63 percent of the votes in the Prague 12 senate district. He entered the Senate as an independent for the first time in 2018, specializing in foreign affairs and security. This year he ran with the support of TOP 09. Boris Šťastný (AUTO) was second just before all the votes were counted, Eva Tylová (Pirates) was third. He told Radiožurnál that he would like to continue to focus on similar topics with an emphasis on defense.

What do you attribute your success to?
I am especially happy that the voters most likely appreciated my work in the Senate, which I developed in the field of defense, security and foreign relations, because we are going through a very difficult period. Europe is not in a good situation in terms of security, and from this point of view I focused on a topic that is not simple and black and white at first glance. That’s also why I appreciate that the voters seemed to appreciate it, and I wanted to thank them very much for that.
What kind of opponent was Boris Šťastný for you?
I would really hate to evaluate individual candidates, because firstly, it is a bit early for that, and secondly, the voter has to decide here. Elections are not about making political theories now. Those of us who are candidates should humbly and responsibly analyze what the voters tell us during those elections, and that’s what I’m trying to do now.

Do you have a new mandate in front of you, what do you want to fulfill it with?
I want to act as a person who has a strong mandate in the Senate and also talks about unpleasant things that need to be addressed – for example, the defense capability of our state, the possibility that we can mobilize faster and be ready faster, so that we do not delegate the issue of defense only to a professional army, that is a question for every citizen of our country.
I would like to open these questions in the Senate and prepare such legislative amendments that will be at the level of the current security challenges. And we all know that the crises that we see on the doorstep of Europe are very serious and we must not only start behaving accordingly, but also prepare and also start approaching security in the field of the economy, not only energy as in the past months, and here we need do a huge amount of work.
With regard to functions in the Senate, committees, or the fact that you would like to be in the leadership of the Senate, is something like that planned?
You have a newly elected senator in front of you who needs to clear his desk, get some rest and then plan. I would very much like to work on the Foreign Affairs, Defense and Security Committee.
