First young children with medical risk receive injection • EMA assesses new corona vaccine

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) today issues an opinion on the vaccine from Novavax. If approved, the Netherlands and Europe may have a fifth corona vaccine, after that of Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Janssen.

The Novavax vaccine is called NVX-CoV2373 or Nuvaxovid and was developed by the Czech company Praha Vaccines, which was bought last year by the American Novavax. People get two shots, with three weeks between the two vaccinations.

If the EMA gives a positive verdict on the Novavax vaccine, the European Commission must make a decision. It is then up to each country individually to decide whether to use the vaccine. In the Netherlands, advice on this is usually first sought from the Health Council.
