First Woman Executed in Singapore in Almost 20 Years: Strict Drug Laws and Recent Resumption of Death Penalty

For the first time in nearly twenty years, a woman has been executed in Singapore. Saridewi Binte Djamani, 45, was hanged for smuggling drugs.

The island state has very strict drug laws. Smuggling more than 500 grams of cannabis or more than 15 grams of heroin can carry the death penalty.

The Singaporean Djamani was convicted in 2018 of smuggling at least 30.72 grams of heroin. She still appealed, but that was rejected in October 2022.

Singapore had temporarily stopped carrying out the death penalty in connection with the corona crisis. The sentences will be carried out again in 2022. Since then, the country has already executed 15 people.
