First wind-powered fast charging station put into use for electric cars in Ghent

The charging stations are accessible to anyone with an electric car. “In 10 to 20 minutes you can charge your electric car for 80 percent at the ultra-fast charging station,” says Nele Scheerlinck, Engie’s spokeswoman. “It is the first charging station in Belgium that works on wind energy with the three wind turbines that we have built here next to the R4. It is ultra-fast, it can go up to 350 kilowatts.”

The windmills are located on the site where Engie also has a biomass power station. The wind turbines are connected to a high-voltage cabin that feeds the charging station.

Wind energy charging stations are still rare, Nele Scheerlinck knows. “You often find charging stations on solar energy. This almost always has green power. If there is no wind, we can take electricity from the grid. Then we also guarantee green power.”
