The precautions taken in South Florida before spring break arrives They bore their first fruits, with the arrest of more than 140 people during the first weekend of the so-called “Spring Break.”
Miami Beach, home of the arrests, was the first city to announce strict measures to prevent incidents during the holiday season, including a high parking price of up to $100.
Spring Break season has always represented a risk to general safety in the city, with dozens of incidents related to excessive alcohol consumption and the presence of illegal drugs among vacationers.
From moral breaches and minor crimes, to shootings and fights with weapons of different types, they are among the events that the authorities tried to avoid at all costs amid the arrival of thousands of tourists, mainly young people.
Along with the closure of streets and the erection of fences, there is a large police presence through foot patrols, bicycles, all-terrain vehicles and even undercover units, in an effort to maintain order and security in the area, reported Telemundo 51.
The measures began this Friday with the implementation of a police checkpoint, in addition to the presence of firefighters and a medical care post at the intersection of 10th Street and Ocean Drive.
“The public will see about 18 local, state and federal law enforcement agencies,” said Christopher Bess, Miami Beach police spokesman, who highlighted the scope of security efforts implemented in the region.
Despite strict controls and additional security measures, some tourists are adamant about spending a few days in the city, with some people even arriving on horseback.
While some tourists found the measures too restrictive, for some residents, they are necessary in order to maintain peace.
For others, however, the situation has meant a loss of the usual fun associated with Spring Break, especially due to restrictions on liquor stores and increased vehicle traffic.
Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner indicated that these measures are intended to limit the number of people in the community, highlighting the importance of prioritizing the safety and peace of mind of residents and visitors alike.
Local and state authorities have promoted measures so that visitors are prepared to comply with curfew schedules, bag searches in case of any suspicion, a reduction in hours to be on the beaches, installation of breathalyzers and arrests for drug possession or violence.
Most of the Spring Break activities take place on a 10-block stretch of Ocean Drive, known for its art deco-style hotels, restaurants and nightspots, where there is the most security.
