The youth string orchestra and percussion ensemble of the Musicarium Philharmonic Academy from Brazil are going on their first European tour and giving three free concerts in Switzerland. On September 26, 28 and 29, 2024, they will play in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Geneva and Bern before traveling on to Germany and the Netherlands. The program includes works by internationally renowned composers such as Tchaikovsky and Brazilian composers such as Villa-Lobos. The 24 young musicians are studying at the Musicarium. This non-profit organization provides musical training to talented children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and prepares them for a professional career. This is their first trip abroad.

The Philharmonic Academy Musicarium from Joinville in the south of Brazil is a social education project that supports talented children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds by providing them with a high-quality classical music education.

Young people abroad for the first time

The first international tour of the Musicarium youth string orchestra and percussion ensemble will take them through Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands. The tour is intended to promote cultural exchange and showcase Brazil’s musical heritage. The 24 young musicians are between 14 and 21 years old and are leaving their home country Brazil for the first time for this concert series.

“The aim of the trip is to create cultural connections and musical exchange. It will be a great development opportunity for the young musicians as well as the Academy and will strengthen international partnerships and recognition,” says Sergio Ogawa, CEO of the Philharmonic Academy Musicarium. “The concert tour is an important success for the Musicarium and increases its visibility in major cultural institutions and the international community.”

Background information

The Philharmonic Academy Musicarium from Brazil is a training center for orchestras. Currently, 180 children and young people are taught by 25 teachers. As a non-profit organization, it promotes young talents and offers them a humanistic music education at the highest level. The Musicarium combines cultural work with social impact. The goal is to become internationally known and at the same time to change lives through music, promote culture and educate children and young people to become citizens with a future. International exchange such as guest semesters play an important role in this. 17-year-old percussionist Caio Uliano remembers how he first heard about the training. “Back then, the orchestral context was new to me – I had never seen an orchestra play before. But I really wanted to take this opportunity.”

The Musicarium was founded in 2017. The children’s orchestra was created in 2019, the youth orchestra was launched in 2024, and five years later, in 2030, a professional philharmonic orchestra is to be founded.
