AFP reported on the 6th (local time) that the first transgender winner has emerged from a Portuguese beauty pageant.
According to the news agency, Marina Machete (28), a transgender woman, won the ‘Miss Portugal’ contest held in Borba, Évora, southeastern Portugal, on this day.
This is the first time a transgender person has won first place in a beauty pageant in Portugal.
Machete, a stewardess, wrote on her social media before her win was announced, “I am proud to be the first transgender woman to compete for the title of ‘Miss Universe Portugal.’” “For years she has not been able to participate, but today she is one of the finalists,” she continued.
Previously, transgender woman Ricky Koller (22) won the ‘Miss Netherlands’ contest last July.
This is the first time in the Netherlands that a transgender person has won first place in a beauty contest.
Machete and Koller, who won in each country, will represent their countries and participate in the world beauty pageant ‘Miss Universe’ to be held in El Salvador next month.
Miss Universe organizers have been allowing transgender people to attend the pageant since 2012.
Five years ago, in 2018, Spanish transgender Angela Ponce (32) entered Miss Universe for the first time.
