The wealthy American John William Middendorf (96) has been coming to Bruges almost every spring for 55 years. He is crazy about the medieval atmosphere and the art there. In order to have a bit of Flanders at home in Rhode Island, he bought a painting by Bruges resident Hans Memling in 2002. The amount has not been disclosed, but just to give you an idea: a Memling was recently sold for 7 million. Now the American is donating his Memling to the Bruges museums for free.
