/ world today news/ Today is the first Sunday of Great Lent – Orthodox Sunday. On this day every year the Holy Church has established to celebrate, in a proper way, the victory of Orthodoxy not only over the iconoclastic heresy, but also over all other heresies.
In connection with this, it was accepted on this day to bring miraculous icons and holy relics for worship. After the Holy Liturgy, a certain rite is performed, which contains a special prayer for the conversion to the Orthodox faith of all apostates and those who have gone astray – a prayer for confirmation in the Orthodox faith of all faithful children of the Holy Church.
On Orthodox Sunday, His Eminence Metropolitan Nikolay of Plovdiv will preside over the Holy Basil Divine Liturgy in the Metropolitan Church “Saint Marina” in the city of Plovdiv from 9:00 a.m.
Miraculous icons and holy relics kept in the Plovdiv Diocese will be brought to the church – for general worship – in memory of the holiday established in 842 by Emperor Michael III – Celebration of Orthodoxy. After the bishop’s service, a lithic procession around the temple will take place with the holy things.
On the occasion of Orthodox Sunday and the victory over the iconoclastic heresy, after the divine service, His Eminence Metropolitan Nikolay of Plovdiv will consecrate the first icon – for the Plovdiv Diocese – of the newly canonized Saint Seraphim of Sophia the Wonderworker, which will be placed on a special proscinitary in the church, and will personally distribute an icon to St. Seraphim, for a blessing, to every worshiper present.
