This Friday the first special blood donation day took place on the ASSE esplanade in front of the Nuevocentro Shopping, with the arrival of the hemobus from Maldonado.
These special days, which already took place at the Hospital de Clínicas in the first instance, are to replenish and maintain the reserves that were affected after the fire at the National Blood Service (SNS) premises in La Blanqueada.
The first special day is this Friday until 3:00 p.m. and will resume next Tuesday the 16th from 9:00 a.m. Due to the tragedy, the SNS will communicate directly with the donors with an agenda to indicate schedules and activities.
To approach donating, it is not necessary to have completed a complete fast, but simply avoid eating solids or dairy products up to four hours before the extraction. “You can drink tea, coffee, mate, soft drinks, sugary juices, eat fruits or cookies in water with jam,” they recommend from the SNS.
To each scheduled donor, we will be communicating the specific activities and schedules.

The La Blanqueada location – on 8 de Octubre and Garibaldi – has a large influx of people and between 40 and 60 donors usually attend on a daily basis. There is the reserve bank of blood components, blood products, supplies, reagents for the entire ASSE system and an immunohematology laboratory that – according to the website – is a national reference.
The fire last Tuesday produced “significant losses” in necessary implements, such as refrigerators and freezers, and an “important part” of the blood stock was lost – the rest was moved to other places that gave space so that it would not be spoil-. This was explained then by the general manager of ASSE, Eduardo Henderson, who did not give exact figures about the losses and, in addition, said that the fire would have been a consequence of “electrical defects.”
After this fire, they asked people with time to donate to be attentive to the start of these decentralized collections that began this Friday. The director of the center, Lidia López, then indicated that the recovery of the stock depends “a little” on the collaboration of the donors, but highlighted that they managed to “rescue lots of blood products” -prepared from blood-, which they had in the cold chambers in the premises. “Fortunately they were not affected and we distributed them to institutions that have offered to store them while a permanent location is found,” she added.
This Thursday, the Minister of Defense, Javier García, announced that the SNS will be temporarily installed at the Military Hospital.
