First snowflakes in the villages of Central Corsica: finally here!

It was not only announced but also expected: the snow finally fell on the villages of Central Corsica. To the delight of residents, whether children, young adults or retirees.

On social networks, those who are most nostalgic for powder share photos from six years ago. To the day. Cut and the villages of central Corsica were covered in a thick layer of snow. Thursday morning, she made her comeback on the winding roads of the region.

The first large snowflakes fell around 9 a.m. before a lull around 11 a.m. and then an intensification of the snowfall around 1 p.m. The thermometer showed negative temperatures, leading to the formation of patches of ice before the saving passage of snow plows and salt spreaders. In the morning, several vehicles found themselves across the road, resulting in a few minor accidents. In the villages, the cobbled streets were covered with a thin layer of snow about five centimeters. School transport was severely disrupted or even cancelled. Ideal for making your first snowman.

At San Pedro di Venacu, Carla-Maria, 8 years old; Francescu-Maria, 3 and a half years old and Marc’Andria, 5 years old didn’t wait long before donning their wetsuits for a few slides in front of the village church.

Always anticipate

But children aren’t the only ones happy when the snow arrives. In Santa Lucia di Mercuriu, the inhabitants were waiting for it and anticipated it. “The first snows came six years after the last big snow of 2017”remembers with a smile Martine, 74 years old. “It’s nice !” resumes the retiree who, while waiting for the snowplow to pass, has removed, shovel in hand, the snow that has lodged on the windshield of her car. “I parked it on the side of the road to follow the snow plow when it passes, by the way jhope he doesn’t go on strike”launches with humor the one who may have to cancel her program for the day: a fitness class and an appointment with the hairdresser.

She has known for a long time: in the village, anticipating is essential. “You just need to have food supplies and a good fireplace, even if it’s not ecological, and you’re fine!”

It is not Josiane, 70, who will say the opposite. Like Martine, she too is serene. “JI have no problem. I have everything I need, I can last a long time”, says the retiree, who came to chat with other villagers in the village square. For her, it’s a golden rule: “The elders have always anticipated, summer and winter, and we do the same”. For Isabelle too, being stuck in the village because of the snow is not a problem, far from it. “We are stuck in front of a magnificent landscape. There are worse all the same!” she laughs. In addition to the beauty of the panorama, the 50-year-old sees not only “a blessing for the planet, given the little rain that fell”, but also the emergence of solidarity between villagers. She did not hesitate to share her snow shovel, bought the day before, with another resident. “We anticipated everything so it’s great. When it stops snowing, we get some fresh air and find our place, then when it starts snowing again, we play cards!”

Teleworking option

Getting together, playing cards, enjoying the snow… Yes, but for working people, being stuck because of the snow is also a constraint. This is the case of Laurine who, if she takes the opportunity to walk her dogs, is however afraid of not being able to go to work today. “I have a hearing that I’m supposed to go to at the Bastia court but I’m not sure I can go… In any case, if I manage to go, I don’t know if I’ll be able to go back up. “she says. “My alternative will be to work remotely on the preparation for the national school of magistrature competition which I am preparing in parallel”, she says. No fear of power cuts for those who stress that “the sons were buried” in his municipality.

If the solution of teleworking is offered to her, unlike her elders, Laurine did not anticipate the snow. “The fridge is empty, I was planning to go shopping tomorrow but if it snows again, I won’t be able to.” Worry ? Of course not. “I know that I can count on my friends in the village”she concludes, looking at Josiane and Isabelle.

In the Cortenais, the nights will be cold and the mercury will drop below 0°C in the coming days, forecasts Météo-France. Nothing abnormal for a real winter season.
