Strong cold air entered the skies over the Hokuriku region from the 17th (Sunday) to the 18th (Monday), and on the 17th, the first snow was observed in Toyama, Kanazawa, and Fukui, which was later than normal. In addition, the first snowfall was observed in Toyama (17th) and Niigata (18th). This week, after the 21st (Thursday), there is a risk of warning-level heavy snow due to even stronger cold air. Please be aware of the latest weather forecast.

There is a risk of heavy snow at the JPCZ warning level from the 21st to the 22nd.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has announced in its early warning that warning-level heavy snow is possible in Toyama, Ishikawa, and Fukui prefectures on the 21st (Thursday) and in 4 Hokuriku prefectures, including Niigata, on the 22nd (Friday). Masu.

From the 21st to the 23rd (Saturday), cold air with temperatures below -9°C is expected to enter the Hokuriku region at around 1,500 meters above the ground, which is expected to bring snow to widespread areas, including coastal areas. Furthermore, from the 21st to the 22nd, a developed snow cloud called the JPCZ (Japan Sea Polar Air Mass Convergence Zone), which stretches from near the continent, is expected to hit the Hokuriku region directly. JPCZ causes strong snow to fall in a short period of time on the Sea of Japan coast in winter, sometimes resulting in disaster-sized snow. It is difficult to predict its exact location, so please keep an eye on the latest weather forecast starting around Wednesday the 20th.

From the 21st onwards, severe cold weather is expected across the Hokuriku region, with minimum temperatures around 0℃. Until last week, there were many days that were warmer than normal, so we need to be careful not to get sick due to the temperature difference.

Signs of heavy snow seen from satellite images

The image above is a satellite infrared image taken on January 8, 2021, when 61 cm of snow fell in one day in Toyama. Its characteristics include:
① Cold air is blowing strongly from the continent, and the distance from the coast of the continent to the clouds (offshore distance) is short.
② A denser cloud line (JPCZ) is clearly seen at the boundary between clouds with different strike directions, and a clear cloud line extends from Ishikawa Prefecture to Toyama Prefecture.

On the Sea of Japan side, on days with characteristics like ①, heavy snow often occurs in places with snow clouds like ②. When you look at the weather forecast, you can also check satellite images to help you learn more about the weather.
