The third GI Joe film will be released in both Dutch and American cinemas this week Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins premiere. The film comes out quite a few years after the two films G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra (2009) in G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013).
Now the first reviews are online for the film in which we Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians, The Gentlemen) as the fast ninja see. At the time of writing, the action movie is on 49% after 47 responses. The average rating is currently 5.10/10.
“Far from quiet and not particularly deadly, Snake Eyes serves as a stepping stone for the GI Joe franchise, thanks in no small part to Henry Golding’s work in the title role,” reads the Critics Consensus on the film by Robert Schwentke ((RED, R.I.P.D.).
Especially a popcorn movie
The reviews are usually weak to just adequate and probably few people would have expected a masterpiece. “This one is too polished to pass as a war crime, but it’s also too bland to be a decent summer film,” can be read in Simon Abrams’ review of RogerEbert.com.
Brian Truitt of USA Today gives the three 3 out of 4 stars: “A satisfying martial arts action adventure with two high-energy protagonists, a slew of lightning-fast swordplay and the best argument yet for a GI Joe movie universe.”
“Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins is probably the best movie you’re going to get with the words ‘GI Joe’ in the title,” writes Owen Gleiberman of Variety. And Michael Ordona of Los Angeles Times: “Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins ultimately has enough fun action scenes to be worth the popcorn money.”
