Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – A history is created in the event 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, Monday (26/7/2021). The Philippines was finally able to win a gold medal for the first time in their participation in the four-year multi-sport event.
All of that could not be separated from the hard struggle of female lifter Hidilyn Diaz who fought in the final of the 55 kg class at the Tokyo International Forum. Diaz became the winner thanks to a total force of 224 kg.
It topped Chinese lifters Q. Liao (223 kg) and Z. Chinshanlo from Kazakshtan (213 kg).
Quoting the Times of India, Diaz’s gold medal was the first since the Philippines participated in the 1924 Olympics. Since then, the Philippines has only collected 11 medals.
Diaz also became the second athlete from the country to win medals in two consecutive Olympics. Previously there was swimmer Teofilio Yldefonzo who won bronze in the men’s breaststroke event at the 1928 and 1932 Olympics.
Personally, this is Diaz’s highest achievement in participating in the Olympics. Previously, he won a silver medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
