First Sign Language Café in Austria to Open in Linz

LINZ. A new café will open at Bischofstraße 11 in Linz in the spring. The special feature: The “Gutmut” is the first sign language café in Austria.

The Gutmut is simultaneously a work integration project for people with hearing impairments and the new sign language café of the Brothers of Mercy. In Gutmut, employees will be able to acquire specialist knowledge in the catering industry in the future, with the aim of subsequently successfully entering the regular job market. Guests with hearing impairments will find service staff who know sign language, while hearing guests can practice signing and take on a different perspective.

Start with trial operation

Of course, there are also cakes and regional vegetarian or vegan delicacies with coffee at Gutmut. A trial operation will start; a fixed opening date has not yet been set. According to reports, it should be ready in the spring. Passers-by will also find a finger alphabet on one of the windows – so they can practice for the opening.

Anyone interested in learning sign language can find courses offered by the BFI Upper Austria Vocational Development Institute or the Upper Austria Deaf Association. The Michael Reitter School in Linz offers a short sign course online and free of charge.
