Thousands of Bulgarians live in the disaster-stricken areas of Germany. There are no Bulgarians affected by the floods in Germany or Belgium. Our consulate general in Frankfurt am Main and our embassy in Belgium have so far received no information about our compatriots killed or missing in the natural disaster. Our missions are in contact with the local authorities, are monitoring the situation and are ready to provide assistance if necessary, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.

Dozens of Bulgarians contacted NOVA and sent us footage of the disaster near their homes. They told us stories of flooded ground floors, boat evacuations and dangerous chemicals on the streets.
The Sauer River, which divides Germany and Luxembourg near the city of Bitburg, has multiplied in size after the floods.
“It was a small river that turned into a huge lake. All night people were evacuated by boats, with excavators, so far there are no casualties, “said Ruen Melnishki.
After more than 24 hours of rain, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate is also in a state of emergency. Residents in the region have been without electricity since yesterday.

“The sirens sounded and all the construction companies in the area were organized, sandbags were brought to limit the bed of our small river so that it would not overflow. The problem is that firefighters cannot simultaneously save people at risk of life and at the same time pump people’s closets with water, so they leave them full of water and try to save people. There are 20 collapsed houses in the neighboring village, 30 people are still unknown – that’s what I say and I get goosebumps “, shared Nikolina Nikolova.
The rain in the mountain village where she lives has already stopped. But the situation is not under control, says the Bulgarian.
“There is a great danger of the dam, which is close to us – it is already overflowing, but when it fills up, it will start overflowing at a faster speed and then they will evacuate all towns and villages in the area,” Nikolina explained.
Residents of the town of Hurt in North Rhine-Westphalia have also been without electricity for 24 hours. Among them is Ivan – a Bulgarian student in Germany who lives in a dormitory.
“A chemical plant has also overflowed and dangerous chemicals are flowing into the streets. The mayor of the city declared a state of emergency, streets were closed, people were told to close their windows, not to go outside. Many homes were flooded, draining water with buckets and hoses. “A boy from the football team I play for is right at the epicenter and will have to be evacuated,” he said.
Our consulate general in Frankfurt am Main has not received any information about Bulgarians killed, missing or injured.
