First Ship with Cranes Arrives at Vizhinjam Port: A Milestone in Construction Progress

Thiruvananthapuram: Shenhua, the first ship to arrive at Vizhinjam port, will be officially welcomed on Sunday 15th. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Union Ports Minister Sarbanand Sonowal, State Ports Minister Ahmed Devarkovil, Adani Group CEO will attend the ceremony at 4 pm. Karan Adani and others will participate.

The ship from China arrived at the port with three cranes to be installed at the port on Thursday.

At 4 pm, the mooring ceremony will be held to officially bring the ship to Ebert. After that, the Chief Minister will inaugurate the conference

A Super Post Panamax crane with a height of 100 meters and a projection of 60 meters into the sea and two shore cranes with a height of 30 meters were delivered to the ship. The next day the crane will be removed from the ship and placed on the berth. A total of eight Super Post Panamax cranes and 32 shore cranes are required for the port construction.

In 2015, during the Oommen Chandy government, the Vizhinjam port was signed with the Adani Group as a public-private (PPP) project worth Rs 7,700 crore. Construction started in December 2015.

The agreement between the government and the Adani Group was to complete the construction within four years. The construction was delayed due to various reasons like rock shortage, Okhi, covid, strike in the area. The port is expected to be completed by May 2024 and operational by December.
