Will this weakness, which was not fixed at launch, become the problem of PlayStation 5?
Many gaming enthusiasts are looking forward to the arrival of the PlayStation 5. Sony’s promises are creating high expectations among buyers. It is therefore all the more annoying that Sony has confirmed the first setback for the new console.
PlayStation 5: Memory is the concern
One of the features of the PlayStation 5 that should give gaming a new dimension is memory. Insiders are very enthusiastic about the possibilities of the new SSD, but it now appears that the standard memory is very disappointing. in addition we already reported that the operating system itself takes a big bite out of the already limited memory capacity.
The PlayStation 5 should provide a solution
Sony has now recognized this problem itself and has already made room in the design to place extra external memory. The disadvantage is that you have to purchase this separately, so that you have to dig deeper into the pouch. This may be overcome for gaming enthusiasts. However, it now appears that the problem with the memory is not solved.
Sony confirms that the port for external memory is not (yet) working
However, it now appears that the port for the external memory cannot (yet) be used. Sony already mentioned compatibility problems that prevent the memory from functioning yet. Now that the launch is almost a fact, Sony confirmed to The Verge that it was unable to resolve the issue before launch. Therefore, the port in which you should be able to install an M.2 drive has been disabled. Sony itself indicates that this is a temporary measure that will be reversed in a future update.
The question is how soon this will happen. The problem with the external memory seems rather complex. For example, the external memory must be very fast and not too large in size. Also, the memory should not get too hot. There are only a few manufacturers who can meet these specifications on paper with their memory cards. In addition, the console maker must first test whether the drivers that comply on paper also work in practice with the PlayStation 5.
However, according to insiders, testing of compatibility has not yet begun. How long the option remains unusable is therefore the question and with that the first setback of the PlayStation 5 seems a fact.
