First scouts camp stopped by corona

A scout group from Sint-Amandsberg stops her bivouac after one of the members has tested positive for covid-19. On Sunday the parents of the scout members picked up their children at the camp site in Couvin. “This incident proves that the concept of the camp bubbles works,” says Jan Van Reusel, spokesperson for Scouts and Gidsen Vlaanderen.

‘The young givers (11- to 14-year-olds) from the Saint Bernadette scouts department in Sint-Amandsberg (Ghent) had just been camping in Couvin for 5 days when a young person fell ill during a trip,’ says Van Reusel. The scout was quarantined and tested positive for Covid-19 shortly after. The scouts camp leadership responded according to the protocol and immediately stopped the camp. To their own regret, this happened: they were only halfway through and still had 5 days of bivouac too good. ”

The 27 members and 6 leaders of the scout association were taken home and further monitored by their GPs.

According to Van Reusel, there is no reason to panic, or not to let other camps continue. ‘This is the first camp of the 1,470 current editions where a scout association has to return home early. The camp bubble does its work as a concept, in an excellent way: the progress and contacts can be monitored well, every external contact of the camp bubble has been logged. In other words, the camp bubbles provide very controlled situations, where it is clear who still needs to be followed up. ‘

Van Reusel speaks with praise for the firm and responsible response of the management of the Ghent scouts department. “They did exactly what they had to do at lightning speed and followed the protocol flawlessly. On behalf of the national leadership, we are particularly proud of the handling of this leadership in a difficult situation and abnormal circumstances. Kudos. “
