In the middle of the war Ukraine, Russia has produced the first nuclear warhead for the Poseidon super torpedo it will deploy on nuclear submarine Belgorod. As reported by the Russian news agency, TASS on Monday (16/1), citing an unnamed defense source.
“The first Poseidon ammunition load has been produced, and the Belgorod submarine will receive it in the near future,” TASS reported citing the source, as reported by the news agency. AFPMonday (16/1/2023).
President Vladimir Putin first announced what would become known as Poseidon in 2018, saying it was a new type of strategic nuclear weapon with its own nuclear power source.
In that 2018 speech, Putin said the range of the Poseidon super torpedo would be unlimited and could operate at extreme depths at speeds many times that of any other submarine or torpedo.
“It has very low noise, has high maneuverability and is practically indestructible to the enemy. No weapon can fight them in the world today,” said Putin.
Compared to intercontinental ballistic missiles, Poseidon is slower but has a devastating impact. Russia says Poseidon can be used as a tactical nuclear weapon against warships.
First launched in 2015, Poseidon is known as Status-6. The torpedo is about 20 meters long and can dive to a depth of 1,000 meters and has a cruising range of 10,000 kilometers. Its ability to operate underwater is so fast that it is difficult to detect.
