First round in the DFB Cup: Those were the biggest sensations in history

The defending champion has already failed five times in the first round of the DFB Cup – as last Eintracht Frankfurt two years ago. But how will it be this time when, because of the Corona regulations, many of the little ones have given up their home advantage and compete in the professional clubs?

Before the start of this extraordinary season, the SPORTBUZZER to big surprises in the first cup round.

SC Geislingen – Hamburger SV 2-0 (1984): At that time, Hamburger SV was still big: But even with stars like Uli Stein, Manfred Kaltz or Felix Magath, the team of coaching legend Ernst Happel was clearly inferior in the Swabian third division. After the game Magath complained: “The real disaster is that we had no chance of winning at all.”

FV Weinheim – FC Bayern Munich 1-0 (1990): Just a few weeks after the World Cup triumph with the DFB-Elf, one thing was clear to Klaus Augenthaler on August 4, 1990: the big FC Bayern will easily walk into round two with Baden’s upper division club Weinheim. But in the end the underdog won sensationally with a penalty from Hans-Peter Makan.

TSV Vestenbergsgreuth – FC Bayern Munich 1-0 (1994): For the new Bayern coach Giovanni Trapattoni, the first competitive game was a disaster. Vestenbergsgreuth is a small village near Nuremberg, but it is played in the Nuremberg Frankenstadion. Millions of fans at the ZDF-Live broadcast and almost 25,000 in the stadium saw the sensational victory of the regional league team. “It is normal for everyone to scoff at us,” said Bayern professional Dietmar Hamann.

SV Sandhausen – VfB Stuttgart 13:12 nE (1995): Even the magic triangle of VfB Stuttgart with Krassimir Balakow, Fredi Bobic and Giovane Elber could not prevent the embarrassment of the then regional division Sandhausen after a record-breaking penalty shootout. Some kickers even had to compete twice. Hendrik Herzog from Stuttgart was the only shooter to miss. After regular playing time it was 2-2.

SSV Ulm – 1. FC Nürnberg 2:1 (2001): In 2001, the former Bundesliga club Ulm crashed into the fifth division for economic reasons. From the first division season 1999/2000 only Dragan Trkulja was in the squad. The Serb scored the 2-1 winner against the “Club”, which was then coached by world champion Klaus Augenthaler.

Stuttgarter Kickers – Hamburger SV 4: 3 nV (2006): At the third division side Stuttgarter Kickers, HSV were already 0-2 behind, but turned the deficit into a 3-2 lead. But one minute before the end, Recep Yildiz equalized for the Kickers to 3: 3, before Christian Okpala scored the 4: 3 winner in extra time.

Embarrassment of TSG Hoffenheim in Berlin

Dynamo Dresden – Bayer Leverkusen 4: 3 nV (2011): Leverkusen with Michael Ballack led 2-0 after twelve minutes in pouring rain, shortly after the break after a goal from André Schürrle even 3-0. But the second division struck back with a brilliant comeback, made it 3: 3. Dresden’s Alexander Schnetzler scored the decisive goal in extra time. “I’m a bit speechless and feel like I’m in the wrong movie,” said Bayer striker Stefan Kießling.

Berlin AK – TSG 1899 Hoffenheim 4: 0 (2012): The Hoffenheim coached by Markus Babbel embarrassed themselves completely at the Berlin fourth division. Already at half time it was 3-0 for the amateurs, who could have won even higher against the team with Tim Wiese, Andreas Beck and Roberto Firmino.

FC Carl Zeiss Jena – Hamburger SV 3:2 n.V. (2015): The Bundesliga dinosaur experienced the next cup disgrace. HSV coach Bruno Labbadia had warned against the fourth division. But it didn’t help: After Michael Gregoritsch forced extra time for Hamburg in the fourth minute of stoppage time, it looked like a happy ending for the favorite. But the batteries were empty, Jena fought and was rewarded by Johannes Piele’s header in the 106th minute.

Sportfreunde Lotte – Werder Bremen 2: 1 (2016): Werder Bremen embarrassed themselves across the board at the third division promoted Sportfreunde Lotte. After the fourth first-round knockout since 2011 against a third division team, Werder’s managing director Frank Baumann complained about a lack of attitude, lack of discipline, tactical deficiencies, an overwhelmed defense and an unimaginative midfield. At the start of the league it was just as bad: 0: 6 at Bayern Munich.

VfL Osnabrück – Hamburger SV 3: 1 (2017): For 70 minutes, Bundesliga club HSV played in the majority after Osnabrück’s Marcel Appiah stopped Hamburg attacker Bobby Wood with an emergency brake. Nevertheless, in the end there was an embarrassment against the third division club. For coach Markus Gisdol it was the beginning of a bad season that ended with relegation. Eight years earlier, HSV had already lost at the Bremer Brücke in Osnabrück – but in the second round of the cup.

SSV Ulm 1846 – Eintracht Frankfurt 2: 1 (2018): As a cup winner, Eintracht Frankfurt traveled to Ulm and embarrassed itself there. For the first time since relegation, the Donaustadion was sold out again – and the regional division won 2-1 against the team of new coach Adi Hütter. For the first time in 22 years, a defending champion was eliminated in the first round. The last time that happened to 1. FC Kaiserslautern was in 1996. Overall, Frankfurt is the fifth club after Lautern, Werder Bremen (1994), Kickers Offenbach (1970) and Hamburger SV (1963), who are eliminated as cup winners in the first round.

SC Verl – FC Augsburg 2: 1 (2019): With the 1: 2 at regional division SC Verl, FC Augsburg failed for the third time in six years in the opening round. The losers then made it to the round of 16. There it was against 1. FC Union Berlin (0: 1).
