From today you can watch on Disney + Niki Caro‘s fairytale movie Mulan. This will not cost you a movie ticket, a tub of popcorn and a bracket beer, but it will cost you 21.99 euros for a stream to the small screen. Take the popcorn and beer from the pantry.
The fairytale film with under Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen, Gong Li in Jet Li is fine ‘fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes after 136 reviews. The Tomatometer is on at the time of writing 79%, with an average rating of 6.99 / 10.
The Critics Consensus on Rotten Tomatoes states: “It could have told its classic story in more depth, but the live-action Mulan is a visual wonder that serves as a poignant update to its animated predecessor.”

Beautiful to see
“Yes, I missed the catchy music and talking animals from the 1998 animated movie. Eddie Murphy as a joking dragon named Mushu may be hard to show in 2020. But I was swept away by the breathtaking Chinese backdrops and big battles,” writes Johnny Oleksinski of the New York Post.
Criticism of Disney’s approach
“It is performed with such precision and showmanship that you would sometimes swear you are watching something with a heart,” said the somewhat cynical Robbie Collin of the Daily Telegraph (UK). And Kevin Maher from the Times (UK): “After the shameless screening of the recent Skywalker saga (also owned by Disney), Mulan has mutated into a slightly less interesting version of Daisy Ridley’s Rey …”
But also applause for Disney!
“Mulan isn’t what we’ve come to expect from Disney’s live-action remakes – it’s much more sober, thoughtful and refined,” reports Clarisse Loughrey of Independent (UK).
