First regular flights from Bremen and Hanover to Lockdown

May 18, 2020, 1:51 p.m.

Lufthansa is again flying from Bremen and Hanover to Munich, and more airlines are to be added in the next few weeks. The extent to which holiday traffic takes place in summer depends on politics.

The airports of Hanover-Langenhagen and Bremen want to gradually return to operation after several weeks of almost complete corona rest. On Monday, Lufthansa resumed its connection between the state capital of Lower Saxony and Munich.

An airport spokesman said the first plane had started in the morning. Flights to Frankfurt are to be added in early June. Wizz Air also offers routes again, for example to Skopje in North Macedonia. However, this flight was canceled on Monday.

Optimism about lifting travel warnings

Lufthansa is also flying back to Munich from Bremen Airport. There were no further connections on Monday either. From the beginning of June, Eurowings is scheduled to start new operations to Stuttgart. One is in discussion with other airlines.

When exactly the first holiday plane can take off is still unclear. In Hanover, this is not expected before mid-June. Travel warnings are currently in effect in Europe, international tourism is still almost over.

Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD) wants to discuss with colleagues from holiday countries how corona restrictions can gradually be relaxed. “We are optimistic that the warnings will soon be lifted,” it said at Hannover Airport. There have been many short-time employees there since mid-March. However, there is sufficient liquidity, one continues to invest in construction projects, for example.
