First Quantum Minerals Partners with MECS for Kansanshi Smelter Expansion Project in Solwezi, Zambia

First Quantum Minerals Ltd., a global copper company, has entered into an agreement with MECS, Inc., a subsidiary of Elessen Clean Technologies, for the Kansanshi Smelter Expansion Project at the Kansanshi Mine in Solwezi, Zambia. The purpose of this expansion is to convert the existing sulphur-burning sulfuric acid plant into a copper smelter for the recovery of sulfuric acid recovery gases.

The main goal of this plant expansion is to reduce emissions from copper smelting while increasing mine production. The transition to a smelter exhaust gas recovery sulfuric acid plant will not only contribute to a more sustainable mining operation, but will also supply more copper to meet the demand for greener technologies in the global market.

MECS will provide state-of-the-art products and technologies for sulfuric acid plant conversion, including low emission catalysts, superior mist eliminators and reliable acid distribution technology. These developments will not only optimize the operations of the Kansanshi mine, but will also support the region by contributing to a more competitive and cleaner global copper and gold supply chain.

MECS’s parent company, Elesent Clean Technologies, is committed to reducing emissions and helping the mining industry operate in a more environmentally responsible manner. The Kansanshi Smelter Expansion is expected to open in 2025, marking a significant milestone for the mining operation and its commitment to sustainability.

MECS sulfuric acid technology has been used in various industries for almost a century, demonstrating its reliability and efficiency. With more than 1,000 sulfuric acid plant licenses and projects, MECS is recognized as a world leader in sulfuric acid production technology.

Elesent Clean Technologies aims to support its customers and help them achieve their long-term sustainability goals. By providing innovative process technologies and equipment, Elessen aims to reduce the environmental impact of industrial activities and create clean alternatives to traditional industrial processes.

Overall, the plant expansion at the Kansanshi mine is a significant step towards more sustainable production of essential metals for the global green energy transition.
