MADRID, 13 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Ministry of Health of Afghanistan has confirmed this Saturday the first case of polio in the country in 2023, specifically in the province of Nangarhar, in the extreme east of the country.
The case has been confirmed in the municipality of Bati Kot, according to the note collected by the Afghan chain Ariana, without giving further details.
In 2020, the country reported 56 cases of polio and in 2021, the number of registered cases was four. Last year, there were only two cases of polio.
The case has been confirmed a week before the start of a new campaign against polio, in which more than 6.4 million children will be vaccinated against the disease, adds the Ministry.
Vaccination campaigns in Afghanistan often run into difficulties due to false conspiracy theories about the vaccine causing infertility or accusations of spying on vaccination teams, often attacked by extremists.
