It was no warmer than -1.4 degrees in De Bilt on Tuesday afternoon, making the first official day of ice this winter a given. According to various meteorological offices, it will remain cold for the rest of the day and freeze more intensely at the main measuring station in Utrecht.
The first day of ice at De Bilt is ahead of average this winter. Normally, the mercury in De Bilt doesn’t rise above freezing all day Dec. 27, according to Weeronline.
The last official ice day was February 13 last year. So it didn’t get hotter than -0.6 degrees at the main measuring station. This icy day was also the last in a string of seven consecutive icy days at De Bilt.
According to the current climate model, there are an average of six days of ice in De Bilt per winter. In the past winter season there were no official ice days and in the winter of 2019/2020 it did not freeze for 24 hours in the city of Utrecht on any day.
Saturday appeared to be the first official ice day of the year after a day full of frost. But in the evening the temperature in De Bilt still rose above freezing. Locally it was a day where, according to Weer.nl, the temperature did not rise above freezing, namely in Eelde in Drenthe.
