First of its kind in the world: Chilean researcher creates vaccine as an alternative to canine neutering

This innovative product allows for the temporary sterilization of dogs, both male and female, without the need for surgery, offering a reusable and more affordable alternative to traditional wear.

EGALITTE was officially launched at the Chilean Veterinary Congress 2024 and It will be available in veterinary centers and clinics in the country at an estimated cost of 50,000 pesos. The vaccine, which blocks the hormone responsible for reproduction in mammals, has been licensed by NGEN Laboratories, a biotechnology company that seeks to bring innovative solutions to the market.

“It is another option that reaches a larger population because it is much easier to use, and it also has the effect of controlling aggression, especially among men. “pointed out Professor Sáenz, who led the development of the vaccine with the support of a multidisciplinary team from Favet. This project is a clear example of the University of Chile’s commitment to technology transfer and innovation.

“By not having hormonal activity, you do not have the secretion of sex hormones that control sexual activity in dogstherefore, it has the same effect as surgical extraction, but without extraction through that surgical procedure,” explained Professor Sáenz.

The EGALITTE vaccine is the result of post-doctoral research by Dr. Sáenz, which began in 2009 and was tested in dogs and pigs with the support of the Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (FONDEF). The University of Chile holds 100% of the patent, and NGEN Laboratorios is licensed to commercialize it.

The innovation was possible thanks to the multidisciplinary work and collaboration of researchers and academics Favet, Mario Maino, Sergio Bucarey and Andronicus Neira.

The launch of EGALITTE has created high expectations in the veterinary sector, especially in towns that carry out large scale drinking campaigns. NGEN Laboratories indicated that the vaccine is an outpatient biotechnological solution, reversible, balanced without side effects, available only by prescription and administered by veterinary professionals.
