The joint committee between the Tawazun Council and the Turkish Defense Industries Authority held its first meeting in Abu Dhabi, following the signing of the partnership agreement between the two sides last July, which addressed areas of cooperation in the defense industries sector.
During the meeting, a number of topics were discussed on the agenda within the joint cooperation programmes, the exchange of knowledge in advanced technology related to the future road map and the implementation of defense projects, the exchange of research and development programs and knowledge in the defense and security sectors between the two countries, in addition to the exchange of visions and experiences in acquisition operations and the defense system. The Joint Committee meeting is an implementation of the agreements signed on the sidelines of the visit of the President of the Turkish Republic to the UAE last July. The aim is to strengthen bridges of cooperation between the two countries and explore promising innovation opportunities, as well as developing a roadmap to promote new paths towards a more sustainable and prosperous future.
Muammar Abdullah Abu Shehab, CEO of the Tawazun Council, said: Holding the committee’s meetings comes within the framework of implementing the UAE-Turkish Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, which serves the future visions of both countries and seeks to explore ways of joint cooperation to achieve continuity in increasing investments in various sectors.
He affirmed the Tawazun Council’s firm commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships and discussing prospects for cooperation to serve bilateral interests in the defense and security industries sector, through implementing the established plans, which will effectively contribute to strengthening relations between the two countries.
For his part, Sharif Hashem Al Hashemi, Chief Operating Officer of the Tawazun Council, pointed out that the successful conclusion of the first meeting of the joint committee laid the foundation for a sustainable strategic partnership and plans to continue the process of progress between the two countries. Noting that the next committee meeting is scheduled to be held next year, 2024, in the Republic of Turkey.

He added that the visit of the Turkish President last July came as a window to strengthen and consolidate cooperation in the defense sector, and we seek to achieve this cooperation by implementing fruitful projects under the guidance of the leadership in both countries.
It is noteworthy that the Republic of Turkey is one of the largest trading partners of the UAE, as the value of non-oil trade between the two countries during the period from 2013 to 2022 amounted to more than $103 billion, according to the Federal Center for Competitiveness and Statistics in the UAE. Earlier this year, the governments of the two countries signed a comprehensive economic partnership agreement aimed at increasing the volume of trade between the two countries by $40 billion over the next five years.
