The US east coast metropolis New York wants to introduce the first compulsory vaccination in the country for employees of private companies.

“We will announce a nationwide unique measure: Our health officer will introduce compulsory vaccination for all employers in the private sector,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio on Monday the TV broadcaster MSNBC.

This is a “preventive strike” in order to throttle the further spread of Covid-19, also in view of the Omikron variant and the upcoming holidays. The new regulation will come into force on December 27th for more than 180,000 businesses and companies. A general vaccination requirement already applies to municipal employees. In addition, children will have to be vaccinated for going to restaurants in the future.

New York was hit hard by the pandemic in spring 2020, hundreds of people died in the metropolis every day for months. The city then recovered and was considered a prime example of how to fight the virus.

In New York, unvaccinated people can no longer sit indoors in bars or restaurants. Events such as plays, musicals or exhibitions also require appropriate evidence. Recently, however, the Omikron variant, which was also registered in New York, was a cause for concern.
