First lock gate of new sea lock in IJmuiden in place | NOW

The first lock gate of the new sea lock in IJmuiden was installed last week, contractor VolkerWessels announced on Thursday. The placement of the 72 meter long lock gate took 72 hours.

The 3,000-tonne door had been in the chamber on the east side of the canal since the beginning of 2019. There, the 24-meter-high lock gate has been fitted with various technical installations in recent months. The functioning of the door will be tested in the next few months.

The two other lock gates are also ready, so that they can in principle be placed. The doors are still in the Amerikahaven in the Amsterdam port area, but they will be transported to IJmuiden as soon as possible, according to VolkerWessels.

The new sea lock in IJmuiden, which will be 500 meters long and 70 meters wide, will be the largest in the world. A consortium of contractors has been working on the project since 2016, which aims to improve the accessibility of the Amsterdam port. The sea lock will be taken into use in 2022 without any setbacks.
