First Lawsuit Filed Against Florida Law SB 1718: Defending Immigrants’ Rights and Civil Liberties

Four organizations in defense of immigrants and civil rights filed the first lawsuit against Law SB 1718 in Florida, which seeks to prevent the settlement of undocumented immigrants.

The first complaint focuses on Section 10 of the law, which punishes the transportation of undocumented immigrants from another state to Florida and could land the accused person in prison, even if they are related to the immigrant.

The organizations Southern Poverty Law Center, the American Civil Liberties Union or ACLU of Florida, Americans for Immigrant Justice and the American Immigration Council are leading this first lawsuit.

The groups allege the law is discriminatory against immigrants and furthermore poses a threat to the rights and well-being of every person in the state.

The lawsuit is against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on behalf of several individuals and the Florida Farm Workers Association, alleging that the law violates people’s fundamental rights and undermines the rich cultural and economic contributions of immigrants.

Anne Hernandez Andersonsenior supervising attorney at the Southern Poverty Law Center, explains to the “El Diario Sin Límites” podcast the details of the legal dispute and why Section 10 was chosen.

The lawsuit against SB 1718 was filed in the Southern District Court in Florida.
