Asunción: Nelly Reig, widow of former President Andrés Rodríguez and First Lady of the Democratic Era (1989-1993), died today at the age of 92 after being admitted to the La Costa private sanatorium, confirmed her nephew, General Carlos Rodríguez Garcete.
He pointed out that her death occurred around 5:30 a.m. due to health problems she had already endured and ruled out that it was Covid-19.
In 2011 Reig received a medal in homage to the 22 years of the coup that ended the dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner. On this occasion she expressed her dissatisfaction and pointed out that she did not see much progress in the democratic government, “because it is not what we expected”.
General Rodríguez was the one who led the 1989 military coup. At the same time he was the father-in-law of the dictator Alfredo Stroessner. The decision to remove the dictator from office is attributed to divisions within the Colorado Party as well as economic differences.
After Stroessner was overthrown, Rodríguez was elected President of the Republic in the general election and opened the doors of democracy. He died in New York in April 1997.
