The reviews
Well, that’s why we list the first reviews for you:

The Playlist: “It’s hard for an actor like Will Smith to escape his public persona. That’s part of the charisma that has made him one of the biggest movie stars in the world. But unlike his work as Muhammed Ali in Michael Mann’s Ali, “This is a role in which he almost completely loses himself. The fact that you simply forget that Smith is playing Richard is an impressive feat considering the running time of 2 hours and 18 minutes.”

Variety: “Smith is quite impressive as the scruffy Richard, and knows how to transfer the natural charisma he has, coupled with the somewhat stubborn focus of his character. Moreover, the film gives him a worthy equal in Ellis as his wife.”

The Hollywood Reporter: “While Smith’s extraordinary acting dominates the film, it doesn’t make up the whole show. Aunjanue Ellis also manages to shine very much as the girls’ mother, who has the strength to resist her husband the moment he gets carried away by his ego.”

Deadline: “Will Smith is a winner with King Richard. He plays the driven, eccentric and controversial father of rising tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams in the 1980s and 1990s.”
