First in RI, this is what makes Jakarta’s two flood prevention dams different

Jakarta

Ciawi dam and Sukamahi which is an antidote to floods in Jakarta has been completed. These two dams are the first dry dams in Indonesia. How does it differ from other dams?

PT Chief Director Indra Karya (Persero) Gok Ari Joso Simamora explained that the success of this project was due to the collaboration of a number of BUMNs.

“This collaboration involves BUMN contractors and consultants, namely PT Brantas Abipraya (Persero) as contractor and PT Indra Karya (Persero) as supervisory consultant whose job is to maintain the quality of work execution through field supervision,” he said in a written statement released on Sunday (12/25/2022).

Ari Joso said that Indra Karya, as a supervisory consultant, has acted as a field supervisor for the Ciawi and Sukamahi dam projects.

“Hopefully, the Ciawi and Sukamahi dams will be the first dry dams in Indonesia, this could be a solution to the flooding problem that often affects Jakarta,” said Ari Joso.

Vice President of Operations and Business Development Indra Karya Gagah Guntur Aribowo, explained that the Ciawi and Sukamahi dams were designed with dry dam type. Dry dams are intentionally left unfilled until it rains.

Therefore, its function will not be that of an irrigation system or a supply of necessary water, but rather that of controlling the discharge of water when it rains. When it rains, the Ciawi and Sukamahi Dams only temporarily store the water which will then flow into the Ciliwung River. The water flow released by this dry dam is reduced as much as possible, so that the discharge of water into the river can be controlled.

Ciawi Dam and Sukamahi Dam are the first dry dams in Indonesia which were finally opened after construction started in 2017 and are expected to act as flood controllers in DKI Jakarta by reducing the water discharge of Ciliwung River when comes the rainy season.

During operation, the Ciawi and Sukamahi dry dams will use the integrated water management system (Simadu) application using climatic data from the BMKG, which displays weather forecasts, accident reports and flood/drought forecasts . With these data, the water discharge emitted by dry dams can adapt to the flood or drought conditions that occur in the field.

“We have been involved in the construction of Ciawi and Sukamahi Dams in the construction supervision of Ciawi Dam Phase 1 and Phase 2, Detailed Design of Ciawi and Sukamahi Dams, Detailed Engineering Design (DED) of Sediment Control Building of the Ciawi Dam and Design Certification of Ciawi Dam and Sukamahi Dam (continued),” said Gaga.

On the occasion of the dam’s inauguration, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said that the presence of the two dams prevented the flooding of 12 urban villages.

“The Ciawi and Sukamahi dams will later be able to shrink from 464 million cubic meters to 318 million cubic meters. About 12 urban villages will no longer be affected by these two dams,” Jokowi said.
