First in Indonesia! Semarang-Demak Toll Road Built Using Bamboo

Jakarta

For the first time in Indonesia, there was the construction of a toll road using bamboo. This bamboo material is used as a toll road mattress system.

The Center for Building Materials and Structures, Directorate of Settlement and Housing Engineering, Directorate General of Human Settlements conducted a test to measure the feasibility of bamboo material as a mattress system to increase the bearing capacity of the subgrade at the Semarang-Demak Toll Road construction site.

“The test was carried out to prepare bamboo material to be used as mattress construction to speed up consolidation time on the soil at the Semarang-Demak Toll Road construction site. Soil improvement through bamboo mattress construction was carried out due to the construction of the sea embankment which is integrated with this toll road. will be built on land with very soft soil classification,” explained the Head of Building Materials and Structures Center for Ferri Eka Putra in a written statement, Monday (20/8/2021).

The tests carried out consisted of 2 types, namely the tensile test of the bamboo mat system and the flexural test of the bamboo mat system with the aim of knowing the behavior of the bamboo strung together as a mattress when subjected to tensile forces in the horizontal direction and compressive forces in the perpendicular direction.

The tensile test of the bamboo mat system and the flexural test of the bamboo mat system were carried out for the first time and were expected to provide a breakthrough in cheap and effective soft soil reinforcement solutions. Taking into account the atmosphere of the Covid-19 pandemic, testing activities are carried out by implementing very strict health protocols and also providing facilitation of witnessing virtual tests or live streaming.

The test was carried out as part of the Full Scale Trial Embankment activity for the construction of the Semarang-Demak Toll Road, which is a project of the Central Java – DI Yogyakarta National Road Implementation Center, Directorate General of Highways, Ministry of PUPR. This activity was initiated by PT Pembangunan Perumahan Semarang Demak (PPD) as the Toll Road Business Entity which will later manage the operations of the Semarang-Demak Toll Road and is supported by PT Lapi ITB as the planner of the Final Technical Details of the Semarang-Demak Toll Road section 1.

The construction of the Semarang-Demak Toll Road is integrated with the sea embankment where the embankment structure above the sea is planned to be reinforced by 17 layers of bamboo mats. In addition to the bamboo mat system, strengthening of soil conditions is also carried out by installing pre-fabricated vertical diverting material or PVD and carrying out loading using sea sand material taken using the Trailing Suction Hopping Dredger or TSHD tool.

“These methods are certainly expected to not only provide an integrated sea wall construction with toll roads that are cost efficient, but also can provide reliable and sustainable infrastructure in the future,” said Head of Central Java-DI Yogyakarta BBPJN Satrio Sugeng. Prayitno.

This sea wall integrated with the toll road is the first construction to be carried out in Indonesia so this will certainly be a challenge for the Ministry of PUPR in its implementation. Another serious challenge is the land acquisition process, which is still hampered by the implementation of the determination of destroyed land and regulations or legal umbrellas that have not yet been issued regarding the handling of social impacts on destroyed land in the context of development for the public interest.

“By carrying out intensive coordination with all stakeholders, both internal and external, we are optimistic that we can overcome these challenges so that the Semarang – Demak Toll Road can be realized in accordance with technical rules and applicable regulations,” he concluded.
