TRIBUNNEWS.COM, BENGALURU – A pediatric physiotherapist from the city Bengaluru, Karnataka state, India, is thought to be the first patient in the country to be infected with black fungus (mucormycosis) and green mushroom (aspergillosis) simultaneously.

Previously, he had tested positive for the corona virus or Covid-19 last April.

Quoted from the New page Indian Express, Friday (25/6/2021), Dr Karthikeyan R experienced a number of symptoms, such as pain in his face, unbearable headaches, and discharge from the nose while being treated at the hospital in Mysuru.

He was later transferred to a hospital in Bengaluru for further treatment.

Chief Consultant, ENT Surgeon and Skull Endoscopic, BGS Gleneagles Global Hospital, Bengaluru, Dr Prashanth R Reddy said that Dr Karthikeyan’s experience did not look like the usual case of black fungus.

Because it had greenish-brown salt deposits (crystals) on its nose, the fungal culture also showed the presence of green mold.

“The endoscopy showed the presence of pus in his nose, and a CT scan and MRI detected a fungal infection. With endoscopic surgery through his nose, we drilled through the bone and removed the dead tissue. Antifungal drugs alone will not cure, because black fungus affects the blood supply to the tissues and grows in dead tissue. After surgery, he will be given antifungal drugs, “said Dr Reddy.

Previously, it was not known that Dr Karthikeyan had diabetes.

However, he was diagnosed with the disease after being infected Covid-19.
