Technologue.id, Jakarta – The planets in the solar system are unique. If Jupiter has what is called the Great Red Spot, Neptune also has a black area that was actually photographed by Voyager 2 when it passed in the 1980s.
Neptune’s black point is called the Great Dark Spot. When the Hubble Space Telescope attempted to photograph the point in 1994, it disappeared. Now, the point of Neptune has been imaged from Earth for the first time, using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT).

“Since the first discovery of dark spots, I have always wondered what these short-lived and elusive dark features are,” said lead researcher Patrick Irwin of the University of Oxford in a statement, as quoted by Digitaltrends.
Researchers used an instrument on the VLT called the MUSE, or Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer, to obtain spectrographic data that shows a 3D view of the point by looking at different levels in the atmosphere.
Research shows that the specks are caused by darker airborne particles, which collect under the haze layer of the planet’s atmosphere.
“I am very excited because I can not only make the first detection of a dark spot from the ground, but also for the first time record the reflection spectrum of the feature,” said Irwin.
The researchers also found an unexpected bright spot next to the dark spot, which is thought to be an unusual type of cloud. The research shows how astronomers can learn more about the atmospheres of planets in the solar system far from Earth’s surface.

“This is a tremendous improvement in humanity’s ability to observe the cosmos. At first, we could only detect these points by sending spacecraft to them, such as Voyager. Then we gained the ability to view them remotely with Hubble. Lastly, technology has advanced to make this happen from scratch,” said co-author Michael Wong.
This research is published in the journal Nature Astronomy.
