Washington: Nadia Kahf became the first hijab-wearing judge in America. Nadia, a family law and immigration attorney from Wayne, has been appointed to the New Jersey Supreme Court. Nadia took the oath touching the Quran.
Nadia has been appointed as a Superior Court judge. Muslim women have served as state judges in the US, but New Jersey is the first time a hijab-wearing woman has held the position. Nadia was nominated by New Jersey Governor Fir Murphy.
Nadia, who has been active in the US social scene for many years, has been a board member of the New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Muslim civil rights organization since 2003. He is currently the Chairperson of the organization. The family immigrated to America from Syria when Nadia was two years old.
