First health insurance premium announced: monthly amount increases, but corona effect is limited

According to DSW, the costs in healthcare are mainly rising due to higher wages in the sector and higher prices, for example due to the use of expensive medicines. According to DSW, this is responsible for most of the premium increase.

A second cause is the fact that DSW no longer has buffers to keep the premium from its own reserves lower. Health insurers often use financial buffers to make premiums cheaper and to win more customers. But those buffers have dried up at DSW.

‘Limited corona effect’

According to DSW, the corona virus has a limited impact on the rising healthcare costs for this year. The higher costs due to hospital admissions, for example, are offset by lower costs for regular care. For example, because fewer people are referred to hospital.

Traditionally, DSW is the first to come out with the premium for the basic insurance for next year. It is a good indicator for the rest of the insurers, who usually follow the DSW line. All premiums must be known by 12 November at the latest.

An increase in premiums was already predicted on Budget Day last week. For next year, the cabinet expects an average health insurance premium of 123 euros per month, a growth of a few euros per month.

The deductible remains 385 euros. The health care allowance will be increased next year by 44 euros for single people and by 99 euros for multi-person households.
