(CNN) — CNN employee Benjamin Brown, who was in Marrakesh when the Morocco earthquake occurred on Friday evening, said it took some time for people in the region to comprehend what was happening.
He and others left the hotel after feeling the tremors and headed to open ground, he said, adding that most people – including some still wearing their pajamas – initially appeared calm, “and then after a few minutes it started, and the screaming started.”
Brown, who spoke by phone to the CNN Newsroom with Michael Holmes, continued that panic set in as people began noticing their injuries: “Some of them appeared to have serious head injuries with a lot of blood, and it’s actually so bad that in one case… “At least an ambulance had to turn away an injured woman because it was completely full.”
He continued: “A very shocking scene for Marrakesh,” and that many buildings were partially destroyed, the roofs of some of them fell and the glass windows were shattered, and parts of Marrakesh’s historical walls collapsed.
