A burst heating pipe caused water damage in the Hellweg sports halls at the North School Centre at the beginning of April. 25,000 litres of hot water ran under the hall floor as a result of the burst pipe.
The drying of the floors in Halls 1 and 2 has now been completed. The new floor has been installed in Hall 2 for several weeks, so that this hall will be usable for school operations again by the end of the autumn holidays. Installation of the new floor in Hall 1 is expected to begin at the beginning of November. Installation will take longer here than in Hall 2 because Hall 1 contains the grandstand, which has to be removed to replace the floors and then reinstalled. The aim here is to be able to make Hall 1 available for school sports again in the period between the end of the Christmas holidays and the start of the Easter holidays if possible.
In order to ensure that school sports can continue in the meantime, the city of Kamen is providing hall capacity in Kamen-Heeren as part of inter-municipal cooperation. The costs of the water damage will be covered by the insurance company. The insurance company decides on the commissioning of the companies carrying out the work and thus ultimately on the time frame.
However, both halls remain unusable for club sports. This is mainly because, in contrast to school sports, club sports require a wide range of sporting segments to be taken into account when occupancy the halls. In addition, the installation of the goals, which are essential for club sports and especially tournaments, cannot yet take place.
Therefore, the city sports association, together with the city sports office, has decided to hold the city indoor soccer championships on December 28th in the hall of the Ernst-Barlach-Gymnasium.
