The first freighter carrying grain has left the port of Odesa, the Turkish government announced on Monday. The bulk carrier will sail across the Black Sea thanks to the agreements reached by Ukraine and Russia, led by Turkey and the United Nations, in July.
Russia and Ukraine recently signed an agreement to allow Ukrainian freighters to once again transport grain through the Black Sea.
Since the Russian invasion, Ukrainian ports have been blocked by Russian warships. As a result, the worldwide export of Ukrainian grain also came to a halt.
Ukraine is one of the largest producers of grain, wheat and vegetable oil in the world. As a result of the blockades, there was a threat of food shortages, especially in African countries.
