The Vorpommern Vandals have already achieved a goal for 2022. With the development of an A-youth, the fourth of four pillars is in the American footballers. This puts the people of Greifswald on a solid footing in both adult and junior tackle and flag football. “Now we want to work on quality everywhere,” says René Schulze. The head coach of the Vandals from Stralsund receives support. The Pikes and Vandals are teaming up this season.

Team Vorpommern, as it is called internally, is in the starting blocks for the first season in two years of a pandemic-related lull in play. In the Verbandsliga, the lowest division in German football, the aim is to beat the Tollense Sharks from Neubrandenburg and the Mecklenburg Bulls from Schwerin. Because “the goal is to get promoted,” says Schulze. The first of three home games will take place on May 8th. And that’s a so-called interconference game, i.e. a game against a team from another season at the same league level. The trio from MV has to deal with the teams from Brandenburg. The Vandals receive the Red Cocks Frankfurt/Oder. Originally, Greifswald/Stralsund, Schwerin and Neubrandenburg were supposed to be in the same league as Frankfurt, Beelitz and Lauchhammer. “I would have liked to have had more games and I think we would have made it on time,” says Schulze. In the now (largely) separate relays of three, the Vandals only have one point in May, June, July and August and twice in September.

In between there is training. Coach Schulze usually welcomes 30 to 35 footballers to the joint training sessions between Greifswald and Stralsund. 55 are available to him in total. “We grew together very quickly, we don’t notice any divisions between players from here and there,” says the 35-year-old.

The cohesion was reflected in the test match. The higher class Eberswalde Warriors were wiped away with 21:0. Schulze doesn’t believe that the season will be one-sided either. “After a two-year break, it’s difficult to assess yourself properly.” In addition, it was only clear after registering for the Verbandsliga that the Stralsund Pikes would be involved with the Vandals. “We use it as a development year,” says Schulze. It’s not just the people of Greifswald who want to push ahead with their current positive club development, the Stralsunds also want to have their own team again in the medium term.
