An aid convoy has reached the Ethiopian region of Tigray for the first time since mid-December. The United Nations World Food Program says thirteen trucks carrying a total of 500,000 kilograms of food aid have arrived in the regional capital of Mekele.
Last week, the Ethiopian army unilaterally declared a ceasefire to allow aid to reach the area. A day later, the People’s Liberation Front of Tigray announced also adhere to the file.
According to the UN, more than 9 million people are facing food shortages due to the war in Tigray, hundreds of thousands of whom are at risk of starvation. Millions of people have fled the violence.
From now on, the World Food Program wants to send emergency aid trucks to the region every day. According to the UN, at least 100 trucks must reach Tigray every day to feed all people.
