MAD Lions failed to make it to the Worlds 2020 main tournament. In the Play-In Stage, the European team lost 3-2 to SuperMassive and is now eliminated.
MAD Lions had a great season in the LEC, but slumped massively at the end. After having held the lead for a long time, they gave it away to Rogue in the closing weekend. As a result, MAD still had to compete in the playoffs for their Worlds qualification, which ultimately led to them in fourth place. That is why MAD Lions had to compete for a place in the main tournament in the Play-In Stage.
Good start
They faced Team Liquid, Legacy Esports, SuperMassive and INTZ in the group. The preliminary round started very promising when MAD won from INTZ, but after that things went less for the European delegate. Losses against Team Liquid, SuperMassive and Legacy Esports saw MAD finish in fourth place in the group, along with INTZ. The tiebreaker against them was won, giving MAD another chance at the main tournament.
Shutdown
To achieve that, MAD first had to deal with the Turkish SuperMassive in a best-of-5. The first four games went alternately to both teams, requiring a fifth game. Unfortunately for MAD Lions, SuperMassive was too strong in that fifth game and the Europeans lost 3-2 which meant the elimination. There are now three European teams in the tournament, all of which are already certain of the main tournament. G2 Esports, Fnatic and Rogue will be in action starting October 3.
