It was a moment truly suspended in time, literally. During the night of Thursday 14 to Friday 15 December, thanks to ideal weather conditions, Big Carl, the largest crane in the world, hoisted and placed the dome of the first reactor building of the EPR project at Hinkley Point C. delicate operation which consisted of handling at several tens of meters in height a part measuring 47 meters in diameter and weighing 245 tonnes on the scale.

With this dome in place, the reactor is now out of water which will allow electrotechnical work to begin on the reactor. Before the dome was put in place, a few days earlier, the crane had already hoisted the giant 750-ton polar bridge to the top of the building. The reactor is expected to start up in 2027 and is part of a major British nuclear program to decarbonize its economy. ■
