First electric car with a range of 1,000 kilometers proposed, but not yet for tomorrow

The Chinese manufacturer Nio would also launch its ET5 model in September this year, which also has a range of 1,000 kilometers. That car manufacturer does use heavier batteries.

“Mind you,” says Jochen De Smet, chairman of EV Belgium – the sector federation for zero-emission mobility – “You can only reach those 1,000 kilometers in optimal conditions: only with one person in the car, without luggage, no too low outside temperatures and with a calm driving style.”

“You can effectively see that Mercedes and other car brands are increasingly working on the range of their electric models,” says De Smet. Many customers suffer from “range anxiety”, the fear that you will not reach your destination with a battery charge. “That’s how Mercedes wants to get this out of the world.”

“However, the question is whether that 1,000 kilometers is necessary,” said De Smet. “New electric cars already have a range of 400 to 500 kilometers and that is more than enough for most people per day. Only frequent drivers and holidaymakers to the south actually need such a range.”
