For anyone who has ever dreamed of piloting a Boston Dynamics robot, launching their own rocket, or letting out their seagulls cry, Nerdland was the place to be. The idea originated with co-organizer Hetty Helsmoortel in 2015 when she went to the Cheltenham Science Festival. “It really felt like coming home to me. I knew the festivals from here like Theater Aan Zee and the like, but that festival in England is just like our festivals. Only all music has been replaced by science. I wondered why such a thing didn’t exist with us. Our festivals such as Werchter, Pukkelpop or Tomorrowland are truly world-class. In addition, we are also frontrunners in the field of science, so I thought why not a combination of the two.”
