Art & Literature A rare first edition of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ (‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’) raised 60,000 pounds (66,280 euros) Tuesday. The first book in the popular book series by JK Rowling (55) was auctioned in Staffordshire, UK.
Only 500 hardcopy copies of the rare edition were printed in 1997. This copy belonged to a Luxembourg man who used the book at the time to teach his children English when they moved to England, the BBC reports. The seller will use the amount to pay off his daughter’s student loan.
For the auction house, which often offers Harry Potter books, it was a record amount for such a copy. Last year, the same first edition brought in 34,000 pounds (37,569 euros).
